Here’s today’s sneak peek:
ANNA, in a voice full of smoke: The world is a frozen frame. All the days are the same day. All the hours are the same hour. The sun stands still in the sky and the time is always high noon. There are other houses along this beach, and in our bedroom is a long brass telescope. I don’t want to look at the stars anymore. I want to look into other people’s lives. When I train the telescope on the house next door I see people standing still, a man with an arm raised, elbow bent, palm upward. A woman bending down to pull up a garment. In that other house, set a little way back from the beach, a boy, maybe a teenager, is falling backwards off a stepladder. But he stays there, caught in mid-air. The world is a frozen frame. Only we can move. This is a science-fiction movie. There’s an alien spacecraft up there somewhere and its rays have paralyzed the Earth.
